Why does the total number of results change when I adjust how my search results are sorted?

Answer

The initial search returns all relevant results from multiple sources, sometimes several of the sources have the same results, creating duplicate results in the initial list.  Once a sort display change has been applied, the system takes the opportunity to account for duplicate records and only returns unique records, rather than multiple listings of the same record.
